There’s nothing like the comfort of cozying up with a good book. Recently we stopped by to meet Dale at 2nd Chance Books, a gently used bookstore in the Penn Valley Shopping Center on New Falls Road that specializes in fiction, romance and children’s books. But, no matter your fancy, you’re bound to find a good book that deserves a second look…
LC: Where did you grow up and how did you end up in Levittown?
I’m from Delaware County originally. I grew up in a small town just south of the Philadelphia airport. After I graduated high school, I moved to Newark, DE to work with Kahunaville. I came up here with them to open the Kahunaville that was in Oxford Valley Mall. I liked the area and put in my transfer paperwork.
LC: Tell us about your family.
I have a small family, especially since I’m not from the area originally. It’s really just me and my 2 boys now.
LC: Tell us about 2nd Chance Books.
2nd Chance Books was a brainstorm in my father’s mind. He pitched the idea to me after I was laid off from a great job with Liz Claiborne when the economy started bottoming out. I didn’t want a typical used bookstore though. I had a new vision that incorporated my merchandising background. With the help of my extended family, we all made it what it is today.
We offer a variety of gently used books in many genres. Our selection consists mainly of fiction and romance books. However, we have children’s, science fiction, fantasy, westerns, cookbooks, biographies, etc. There’s really too many to list.
LC: Old or new, have you read anything recently that you would recommend?
I don’t read mainstream authors like James Patterson or Nora Roberts. I am a cover girl. Something has to catch my eye in order for me to pick it up. My favorite book that I found is “The Historian” by Elizabeth Kostovia. It’s a historical fictitious story about the quest for Dracula. I recommend it all the time and have yet to receive a copy of it back.
LC: What do you like to do with your free time?
I don’t get that much free time outside of work and attending the boy’s sports games. I love to go dancing, flea-marketing, and to country concerts. That’s probably the bulk of my time, but wish I could travel more.
LC: What are some of your favorite things about Levittown?
It’s a big area with so many options between shopping, restaurants and entertainment. Although it’s not exactly a small town, my store has given me a small town feel. I’ve met so many great people that I’ve come to know by name. Without them, my store wouldn’t be what it is today.
Thanks, Dale. It was great hearing your story and we love having 2nd Chance Books as part of our community. If you’d like to learn more about 2nd Chance Books you can visit and like their Facebook page.
