Our hearts are heavy with the news of Hannah’s passing on Sunday morning. Hannah taught a lot of us about bravery and how to “fight like a baby.” At such a sad time, it’s good to be reminded that the world is a better place because of Hannah. Continue reading
Residents in the Levittown area are wondering what’s causing the recent increase in air conditioning condenser thefts this past holiday weekend. These crimes wreaked havoc on some local businesses and even a church. Reports say it’s related to drug addicts trying to get their hands on some quick cash.
We spoke to Mike of BK & Sons, a scrap metal business on Southampton Road in Philadelphia who agrees. “While 99% of our business is done with established companies who have proper, legal ownership of the scrap they trade in, we still see a fair number of walk-ins looking to scrap small amounts of metal and we have no way to know where they got it.”
Most scrap metal yards have policies requiring scrappers to show a current driver’s license for any metal worth over $100.00. Since the market price of copper is down to $2.65 a pound, these thieves are scoring between $30 and $40 for the core of the units, consequently, when they scrap the stolen goods they don’t have to produce identification!
Condenser thefts damage more than just the comfort of our homes and our peace of mind.
When thieves hastily disassemble the units in search of copper to sell for scrap, freon and other hazardous refrigerants are released into the air. No matter which side you fall on the argument about climate change or ozone depletion, these chemicals are regulated by the Environmental Protection Agency under The Section 608 Refrigerant Recycling Act. Under the Act, the EPA is authorized to assess fines of up to $37,500 per day for any violation of these regulations. There’s reportedly a $10,000 reward for turning over evidence of anyone violating this regulation, however, the insiders we spoke to told us that the EPA is just too busy to follow-up on these minor violations.
According to a Levittown State Farm Insurance agent who wishes to remain anonymous, while her office has not experienced an increase in claims related to thefts of homeowner’s air conditioner condensers, she has seen an increase in homeowners who report being victimized by this latest craze in scrap-related theft. “The combination of the homeowner’s deductible and the hesitance to have such a minor claim on their record usually winds up causing the unfortunate homeowner to absorb the cost of system replacement.”
But there are steps you can take to protect yourself from this “perfect crime”, as we found out when we spoke to John Musser of local HVAC contractor, ECI Comfort.
To help us get all Flyered up this year, Levittown Comfort ran a contest on its Facebook page with Beer-A-Rama where a fan would win a signed Claude Giroux jersey. Just before the first round playoff series with the New York Rangers began we announced this contest and ended up with hundreds of entries.
Last night, just before the puck dropped for game 6, we announced Heather Dooley as our contest winner. And, this afternoon Heather picked up her prize at the Beer-A-Rama store on Levittown Parkway. Congratulations Heather! We hope the jersey brings you and our team luck tonight as the Flyers play the final game of this tough first round series. LET’S GO FLYERS!!!
It’s a busy and exciting time at Wade’s Comic Madness on New Falls Road lately as they gear up for Free Comic Book Day and the Team Willa Fundraiser this Saturday, May 3rd. The other day I stopped by to catch up with Wade and tour his awesome store. Get to know Wade, his awesome store and all about the madness about to take place this weekend!
Here at Levittown Comfort, we love us some nostalgia. Unfortunately, Levittown nostalgia can only go back as far as the early ’50s. This recently published collection of pictures takes back even farther and reminds us that people many generations ago were just like us in their love of selfies, cats and technology.
If you’re already looking ahead to the weekend here are a couple of goings on around town for you to consider.
Today’s spotlight article takes us to KrisCroix’s Restaurant at 198 Lincoln Highway in Fairless Hills where they serve up seafood, chicken, burgers, platters and more. We caught up with Vincent to learn more about one of our favorite local, family-owned restaurants.
While growing up in Holly Hill, hearing ghost stories about the Bolton Mansion was unavoidable. In this edition of Levittown Youtube Theater we explore the various attempts of ghost hunting at our favorite historic Levittown landmark.
This weekend is going to be beautiful. And, now that winter finally feels over-ish, we can all look back at the horror of the past season and have a good chuckle. Remember when it was freezing all the time, we lost power and battled with severe depression? HA! Good times. Well, it’s time to get happy and relive those hilarious images of the not distant enough past as we say good riddance to Old Man Winter.
After a harsh winter of spending my evenings hibernating it’s nice to finally get out and enjoy the night sky again without fear of frostbite. Last night was pretty clear over Levittown and tonight has the same potential. If you find yourself under the stars tonight here are a few objects worth checking out.
